Step 1 — Stay safe, take a breath
Lockouts are frustrating but rarely urgent. The first job is to get yourself and your car out of harm's way. Pull on a hi-vis if you have one, move off the carriageway onto a verge or pavement, and don't stand between lanes of traffic while you work out what to do next. If you're on a dual carriageway or A55, stay inside the car with your seatbelt on and put your hazard lights on until help arrives.
Step 2 — Check the obvious
Before you call anyone, walk round the car and:
- Try every door, including the boot. Driver, passenger, both rears.
- Check the boot — many saloons, estates and hatchbacks can be opened with a manual key release hidden behind a flap, even when the central locking is dead.
- Check the fuel filler — a few older cars lock and unlock with the same key. (Don't try to break in via it — the cap is too small and you'll damage the paint.)
- Check spare / house key — if you carry a second key at home or with someone, this is the easy answer.
- Check the app — some newer cars (BMW, Tesla, Ford, Hyundai, MG, Vauxhall) let you unlock via the manufacturer's app.
Step 3 — Don't break in yourself
It's tempting. We've seen the damage: bent window frames, damaged door seals, scratched paint, broken weather strips, snapped lock cylinders, and once a side window that cost £380 to replace. Breaking in yourself always costs more than calling a locksmith. What we do when we arrive
1. Verify ownership — we ask to see photo ID and one of: V5C logbook, insurance document, or a recent utility bill. This protects you — it means nobody else can get a key cut for your car.
2. Open the car — non-destructive entry through the door lock. No damage, no drilling.
3. Make a new key if needed — cut and program on the spot, usually inside an hour. (If you have a working key, we can simply duplicate it for a spare while we're there.)
4. Hand back your keys and the receipt for your insurance.
What about the weather?
It rains. A lot. If your car is the only shelter you have, stay near it but keep clear of traffic. If you've got a friend or a taxi rank within a few minutes' walk, get to a warm place — we'll come to you whether you're at the car or not. We do this at 2am in horizontal rain in January too.
Cost and time
Typical North Wales lockout:
- Coastal towns (Rhyl, Prestatyn, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Conwy, Bangor): 20–40 minute response, from £80.
- West of the A55 (Caernarfon, Porthmadog): 45–75 minutes, similar fee.
- Llŷn Peninsula and Anglesey: 60–90 minutes, similar fee.
- Lockout + new key: combined, from £180 total.
You'll always get a price before any work starts. No surprises.
Prevention next time
The cheapest lockout is the one that doesn't happen:
- Order a spare key while you still have two — we cut spares on the spot from £90.
- Keep a spare at home or with someone you trust, not on the same keyring as the main key.
- If your car has a keyless fob, use a Faraday pouch for the spare at home (stops relay theft).
- Replace the fob battery every 2–3 years — a weak battery can stop the car recognising the fob and lock you out.
