How much does a spare car key cost in 2026?

A spare car key in North Wales typically costs £90–£250, depending on your make, model and key type. A plain metal flip key is at the low end; a modern keyless smart fob is at the high end. Here's what you'll actually pay and why.

Quick answer

Most spare car keys in North Wales fall in the £90 to £250 range with a mobile auto locksmith. Main dealers are typically 30–60% more for the same job, plus the cost of getting the car to them. The biggest variables are the make and model (which determines the key blank and coding), the type of key (plain metal, remote, smart, keyless proximity), and whether you have a working key to duplicate from.

Spare key prices by type (North Wales, 2026)

Why the price varies

Three things drive the cost:

  1. Key blank cost. A 2003 Fiesta blade is £4. A 2022 Range Rover fob is £90. We don't make these in a shed — they come from specialist suppliers and have to be right for your specific vehicle.
  2. Coding time and equipment. Programming a basic remote takes about 10 minutes. Programming a 2020+ VW proximity key with all-features takes 30–40 minutes and uses dealer-level diagnostic tools (Autel, XTOOL, ODIS).
  3. Immobiliser type. Older cars (pre-2000 mostly) have fixed-code immobilisers — easy. Newer cars use rolling code which is more complex to enrol. Some premium brands (BMW CAS, Mercedes FBS3) require special procedures that add 20–30 minutes.

Spare vs lost-key replacement — a big price difference

If you have at least one working key, a spare is the simpler job: we duplicate the existing blade and clone the transponder data. Expect £90–£250.

If you have no working key at all, the locksmith has to extract the immobiliser data from the vehicle first (using diagnostic tools), generate a brand-new key, then code it in. Expect £180–£400 depending on make. That's why we always say: get a spare made before you lose the only key.

Main dealer vs independent locksmith

A main dealer spare key in North Wales is typically 30–60% more than a mobile auto locksmith. The reasons aren't about quality — the equipment and blanks are the same. They are:

Quality is the same. We use the same Autel IM608 Pro, XTOOL X100 Pad3 and OEM/ODIS for VAG that a main dealer uses, with aftermarket and OEM blanks from the same suppliers.

Real prices, common cars (North Wales, 2026)

Prices are typical and exclude VAT; some makes (Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes, premium) sit at the higher end because the key blank itself is more expensive.

What affects the quote — five things

  1. Make and model — the key blank and the immobiliser type.
  2. Year of registration — older keys are simpler, newer are smarter and more expensive.
  3. Type of key — plain metal, remote, smart (proximity), display key.
  4. Whether you have a working key — huge difference, see above.
  5. Number of spares you want at the same time — the callout cost is the same whether you want 1 spare or 2 spares, so a second spare is only the cost of the blank + coding time.

What's included in the price

A standard spare key from Keymotive includes:

What's not included (no extra charge, but worth knowing)

We don't charge extra for:

When a spare key is worth it

A spare pays for itself the first time you avoid a lockout — when:

If the spare is £120 and the emergency callout is £250, you break even after one avoided lockout.

Tips to make the spare last

  1. Keep the spare in a Faraday pouch (a few pounds online) — blocks relay theft if your car is keyless.
  2. Store the spare separately from the main key — in your house, not on the same keyring as your everyday key. If you lose your everyday set, you still have the spare.
  3. Use the spare every few months so the battery and mechanism don't seize from disuse.
  4. Replace the spare's battery every 2–3 years — same as your main key.
